Kannawidan Festival 2021

Like every other places, the Province of Ilocos Sur always celebrates its rich and diverse culture and tradition through the Kannawidan Festival, held at the end of January through the first week of February. It is a celebration in which all the 32 municipalities and 2 cities of Ilocos Sur merge as one to showcase each of their products like the Vigan Longganisa, the Candon Calamay, Abel Iloco and more.  Varying from fresh goodies, dry goods and textile clothings, the Kannawidan Festival is an event where locals and tourists learn more about the heritage and culture of the province whilst enjoying themselves.

This year’s Kannawidan Festival is far different than what the people are accustomed to. Given the circumstances we are in, with the COVID-19 virus still lingering around and the continuous spike in the number of cases, the authorities made sure that the celebration will still continue but safety protocols will be followed in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the visitors. The usual utilization of face masks and face shields along with physical and social distancing was strictly implemented during the celebration of the said festival. It was also advised that people who does not pass the age restriction cannot enter the premises, in accordance to the health protocols implemented by the Department of Health. Disinfection and sanitizing was strictly advised not only to the visitors but also to the participants. The usual events that happen every year was stripped down entirely and only a few were carried out in order to avoid the spread of the virus.

Festivities like the Kannawidan Festival are always filled with joy, eagerness and the bustling crowd because it is a way to showcase the culture and heritage of the Province of Ilocos Sur. Despite the circumstances we are in, we still carried out our tradition because we are proud to showcase what we have to offer to the world and even though the virus restricted many things, we managed to get through.
