Batch 2020: Are we all in this together?

Learning was supposed to be fun. It was supposed to give us the knowledge we need to continue on with our lives and pursue our dreams and aspirations. But since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the world has seized to a stop and one of the things that was affected was our education. It became a challenge not only to us students, but also to the teachers and staffs to adjust to the new normal way of learning. The goal was to continue on giving us, students, the knowledge we need to obtain. But are we really doing a great job at it?

Quality education for all, amidst the pandemic seemed possible as perceived by the government here in the Philippines. Many learning modalities were introduced in order to cater the needs of the students. We have online learning, Modular learning and the Department of Education even requested to have TV channels only for lectures on different subjects, and radio stations specialized on sharing knowledge to us students. But despite our country providing and giving these to us, it is still hard to say that we are receiving quality education.

On the fifth of October, the kick-off for the School Year 2020-2021 was held. Secretary Leonor Briones said “Ito ay triumph ng education, ito ay triumph ng Filipino people, triumph ng values ng Filipino…” after we have claimed ‘victory’ against the virus for starting classes. But we did not really won our battle with the virus given the fact that our country is still struggling to adjust on how to live in the new normal style.

Many plead for academic freeze in our country, not because we do not want to learn, but because of the fact that we are not really ready. There are many students who don’t have a good connection for online learning, there are students who can’t find a way to get their modules despite them trying their best, there are students who just can’t learn anything even if they tried their best because they are used to face to face learning. There are students who are studying just for the sake of meeting the deadlines. As a student myself, I prefer to have a face to face interaction when learning because I learn more and I can focus better on actually learning.

Teachers and staffs are trying their best to give us our needs. Printing out modules, checking our answer sheets, checking up on us, and also having a home life. They face countless sleepless nights I order to give us the best and ensure that we still learn something. But it is still hard given the fact that we, the students do not have the same learning capabilities so in most cases, it will took others much time to comprehend what the topic is.

To sum it all up, quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic is not served to some students. But we can’t just take the majority over minority rule because our future is at stake. We want to learn, we want to be prepared for our future, but this way of learning will take a much longer time to warm up on us. Because we don’t want to study for the sake of passing, for the sake of meeting the deadlines. We want to study, we need to study, for the sake of our future. But during the pandemic are we really learning?

  1. I agree. Many are having a tough time due to the new system of learning and that the expected "Quality Education" is less likely for the Filipino youth as of the moment due to some lackings and unpreparedness.
