Sovereignty of the Philippines
Our
country declared its independence from Spanish colonialization more than 120
years ago. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the President at the time, declared our
independence in Kawit, Cavite. The Philippine National Anthem, as well as the
public display of our own identity, our Philippine National Flag, were also
introduced commercially.
The Philippines became an independent nation
on July 4, 1946. However, previous President Diosdado Macapagal issued a
presidential proclamation on June 12, 1962, declaring the country's day of
liberation. R.A. no. 4166, which came two years later, solidified the date
shift.
On June 12th, the Philippines' Independence
Day, everyone in the country honors the national heroes who overcame adversity
and sacrificed their lives in exchange for our freedom and for us to live in a
peaceful nation that thrives to grow and foster as the years pass. Every
citizen can sense nationalism since it is the reason we battled for something
that is rightfully ours.
Parades are held all around the country,
with involvement from both the government and the general public. Businesses,
companies, and schools are closed on this national holiday, and families spend
the day in parks and participating in various celebratory activities. Programs
and annual parades are held in Filipino communities around the world.
